Rear shot of Galloping Ghost. Notice how smooth the fuselage and wings are. This aircraft flew in the Cleveland Air races in the late 1940s. Purchased by Jimmy Leeward and pains takenly disassembled and rebuilt into the modern state of the art racer you see here.Notice the famous Mustang scoop under the fuselage is gone and the canopy is cut down. One slippery looking Mustang hybrid.Pilot/Owner Jimmy Leeward poses for me in front of his Galloping Ghost. A qualifying snafu forced Jimmy to start last and then win in each of the Medallion, Bronze and Silver races to advance to the Gold Championship Race. The Gold was cancelled on Sunday because of high winds so we will never knowClose up of Race 177 Merlin engine. This engine, cooled by nitrogen boil off system, supplied the speed for Jimmy to win the Medalion, Bronze and Silver Unlimited races. Could he win the Gold? We will have to wait until next year.Engine cowlings removed reveal the powerful Merlin engine. The Galloping Ghost has a boil off nitrigen cooling system to keep the big engine running cool. Flight times are limited to about 30 minutes.
